Dinosaur Crafts for Kids

Most children recognize that God made the different animals and plants. However, most children do not think about God creating the dinosaurs. They tend to think of dinosaurs as primitive creatures that lived long before man, and that they really have nothing to do with creation. It is no wonder they think this.  I don't think I have ever seen a picture about creation that included some dinosaurs. Have you?

The topic of dinosaurs is probably used more than anything else to convince young people that evolution is true, and that the process took millions of years.
The Great Dinosaur Mystery Web site explains in simple terms why it is obvious that God made the dinosaurs. You can find information about Dinosaurs and where they fit into the Creation Story.  This site answers questions about the Great Flood, how different races developed, where in the bible dinosaurs are mentioned, creation and evolution. You will also find coloring pages with rhymes and  teacher notes that will help you explain and teach about the dinosaurs.  There is also a teachers resource page with suggested books and videos, craft ideas, room decorations, and teaching tips.

Egg Carton Stegosaurus

What you will need: Two cardboard egg carton, four toilet paper rolls, paint, glue, and scissors.
What to do:
1. Use one TP roll for the body.  Cut another TP roll about 3” long.  Cut 1/2” slits into one end of the roll. Put glue around the slit end and slide it into the body TP roll to make the neck.
2. Cut another TP roll about 3 1/4” long to make the back legs. Cut a “U” shape out of one end about 2” long and as wide as the TP roll.  Cut it to fit around the body TP roll.  Glue it onto the body.
3. Cut another TP roll about 2 1/2” long for the front legs.  Cut two “U” shapess to fit the TP roll around the body TP roll.
4. Cut little “V” shapes at the bottom of the legs and draw lines all the way up to the top of the legs to make the legs look separate.
5. Cut a center bumps out of the egg cartons leaving them attached to each other. Separate one bump to use as the head.  Glue it to the neck.
6. Use the other row of bumps for the dinosaurs boney plates. Glue them along the top of the nex and body. I added more bumps from the other egg carton to make it a little longer.
7. Paint the dinosaur.

Rock Tyrannosaurus

What you will need: Rocks in the shape of dinosaur parts, paint, and black permanent markers.
What to do:
1. Go for a hike and collect rocks that will fit together to look like a dinosaur.  Bring them home and wash them off and let them dry.
2. Paint the rocks with permanent paint (Apple Barrel Paints work great). Draw in the dinosaurs features with a marker.  Set the rocks outside in your garden.

Dinosaur Feet These feet are fun to play racing games with so make a couple of sets. They would make a great party game for a dinosaur theme party.

What you will need: Shoe box size boxes, paint, fun foam, glue gun, knife, newspaper, and duck tape.
What to do:
1. Cut a small hole in one end of each box just big enough for a child’s foot to fit in.
2. Tape the box closed with strong tape.  Stuff the inside front and sides of the box with newspaper leaving just enough room for a child’s foot to fit inside.
3. Spray paint the boxes a dinosaur color and let them dry.
4. Cut out 2 inch claws from fun foam and glue them to the front top of the box.

Dinosaur Pals Plaster of Paris Molds - These are the first plaster of Paris molds I’ve ever seen that allow you to make a mold in the round. They’re simple to make, just follow the directions, and you will have great little dinosaur statues your children will love to paint.  The molds are made of a flexible rubber that can be rolled off of the mold when it is dray and reused over and over again.  The statues can be painted with regular water colors so any age child can have fun making these. For more information and directions go to the Botanical Science Web Page.

Dinosaur Refrigerator Magnets

- We found these molds in the soap making section at Michael’s Craft Store.  All you need to do is buy some Plaster of Paris and follow the directions on the package. After you pour the plaster, press one round magnet into the wet plaster and it will dry in place.  If you forget to put the magnet in, just use hot melt glue to glue a magnet onto the back when you are done.

Dinosaur Board Game -

What you will need: Foam core board, markers, dinosaurs, paint and sponge.

What to do to make the players:
1. Go to the
Download a Dinosaur web site.  Print out the dinosaurs and assemble them according to the directions.  If you don’t want to make the dinosaurs you can just use small plastic dinosaur toys.

What to do to make the game:
1. Draw a cave at one end of the board and mark it “Home”.
2. Cut a dinosaur foot print shape out of a sponge.  The foot print should be at least 4 inches wide. Dip the sponge in paint and put foot prints on the board in a circle around the outside of the board until you come back to the “Home” space.
3. If you would like you can just draw the foot prints. Beside some of the foot prints write some of the following directions:

  • Stuck in the mud. Lose 1 turn.
  • Can’t find enough food.  Go back home.
  • Can’t find water.  Go back 3 spaces.
  • Volcano erupts.  God back 2 spaces
  • Chased by a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Go back 3 spaces.

    4. Have your child help you draw pictures of a volcano erupting, a Rex, mud, etc. on the board next to the appropriate directions.
    5. To play the game, players take turns throwing the die and traveling around the board. The player who makes it all the way around the board and back to the “Home” space first wins the game.
